Barbells consist of a long bar usually between 4 feet

The length
of the bar varies considerably - although the longest bars are generally only

The diameter of approximately 1 to 2 inches (25 to 50 millimeters).
A crosshatch pattern is often engraved in the central area(s) of the bar
to help maintain grip.
Disc weights of variable mass can usually be slid on each end of the bar,
and these are held in place using collars, although you can also find bars
with fixed weights (these are useful if you want to rapidly transition between
different weights, and are often found in gyms).
